Shelf Help

Woman Wearing Headphones

A quick note before you dive in: I’m much more of a listener than a reader. I listen to books constantly—while walking, driving, cooking, and doing life. I’m a total therapy book nerd, and I have a massive library that I’m always learning from and adding to. Luckily, my audiobook-hoarding tendencies don’t take up much physical space (a small win, honestly).

Listening or reading isn’t for everyone, and it’s never a requirement for healing. That said, I do think books can be incredibly supportive companions when you’re on a journey of understanding yourself, your relationships, and your nervous system. There’s a little bit of something for everyone here—some practical, some reflective, some deeply validating.

I also have many books I enjoy but don’t recommend as often, which I may still share from time to time. And I’ll be starting an online book club, with several books I’m eagerly looking forward to beginning together.

Most—if not all—of these books can be found through your local library or Libby, on Amazon or Audible, ordered from a local bookstore, or occasionally even downloaded as a PDF.

Books I Recommend

Understanding Yourself & the Human Experience

Man’s Search for Meaning — Viktor E. Frankl

  • A powerful reflection on meaning, suffering, and resilience. This book explores how humans endure hardship and find purpose even in the most painful circumstances.

The Gifts of Imperfection — Brené Brown

  • An invitation to let go of perfectionism and cultivate self-compassion, courage, and authenticity. Especially helpful for people who feel driven by shame or self-criticism.

Nervous System, Regulation & Inner Life

Breath: The New Science of a Lost Art — James Nestor

  • Explores how breathing patterns affect physical health, emotional regulation, and stress. Practical, accessible, and often surprising.

Heart Minded — Sarah Blondin

  • A gentle, reflective book that supports emotional presence, self-connection, and compassion. Often resonates with people who prefer a softer, intuitive approach.

Relationships & Attachment

Hold Me Tight — Sue Johnson

  • A foundational book on attachment in adult relationships. Helps couples understand emotional cycles, deepen connection, and repair disconnection.

Relationship RX — Stan Tatkin

  • Grounded in neuroscience and attachment, this audiobook explores how relationships function under stress and how partners can build safety and stability together.

Fierce Intimacy — Terry Real

  • Challenges traditional relationship myths and encourages honesty, accountability, and deeper emotional intimacy—especially useful for couples stuck in power struggles.

Boundaries, Identity & Family of Origin

Setting Boundaries That Stick — Juliane Taylor Shore

  • A practical and compassionate guide to understanding boundaries, why they’re hard to maintain, and how to set them without guilt or over-explaining.

Adult Children of Emotionally Immature Parents — Lindsay C. Gibson

  • Helps readers recognize the impact of emotionally immature caregiving and begin developing a stronger, more grounded sense of self.

Neurodivergence & How Minds Work

ADHD 2.0 — Edward M. Hallowell & John J. Ratey

  • An updated, strengths-based look at ADHD, offering insight into attention, motivation, and nervous system differences across the lifespan.

Differently Wired — Deborah Reber

  • Written for parents and caregivers, this book reframes neurodivergence through acceptance, connection, and emotional attunement rather than fixing or pathologizing.

Sexuality & Embodiment

Come As You Are (Revised & Updated) — Emily Nagoski

  • A science-based, shame-free exploration of sexual wellbeing, addressing desire, arousal, and cultural myths with warmth and clarity.

Parenting, Culture & Modern Pressures

Good Inside — Becky Kennedy

  • Centers parenting around connection rather than control, helping caregivers understand behavior through emotional needs and nervous system regulation.

The Anxious Generation — Jonathan Haidt

  • Examines how cultural shifts—particularly technology and social media—are affecting mental health in children and adolescents.
